Sahel Shake-Up: Macron Defends France’s Role Amid Backlash and Withdrawals
French President Emmanuel Macron has said that he is awaiting thanks from Sahel states in Africa for stopping Islamists. Macron was speaking to French ambassadors at the annual conference on foreign policy for 2025. Macron has said that France was right to intervene in 2013 to fight Islamist militants. In a reference to Sahel nations, Macron has said that none of them would have been sovereign nations had it not been for the French army. Macron has said that France has decided to reorganize its strategy and has dismissed the conception that it was kicked out of the Sahel region. However, contrary to Macron's claims, there were prior suggestions that the French nation's military presence was not welcome in the Sahel region. Ousmane Sonko, the Prime Minister of Senegal, had criticized the French military presence in his country in May 2024.
